Ohio Valley University was chartered in 1958 by members of the Churches of Christ. Classes began in 1960. Baccalaureate degree programs range from Accounting to Sports Management. For those interested in
nursing, an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Nursing is offered through an arrangement with
West Virginia University Parkersburg.
Ohio Valley University is a member of the NCAA Division II. Men's sports are baseball, cross country, basketball, soccer, club lacrosse, and golf. Women can play cross country, basketball, softball, golf, soccer, and volleyball. The university is a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and also has several intramural sports for students to participate in.
Ohio Valley University has accredited study abroad programs in England and Italy. The Best Semester Program is an opportunity for students to spend a semester abroad or in the U.S. This is offered through the Council for
Christian colleges and Universities. Students can earn up to 16 credit hours in the semester programs. The Council for
Christian Colleges and Universities is associated with more than 170 higher-learning centers around the world. Some of the programs include the Los Angeles Film Studies Center and the Washington Journalism Center, along with programs abroad called the Australia Studies Center and the China Studies Program.
The Ohio Valley University Library has approximately 34,000 volumes, 140 print periodical subscriptions, 60,000 microforms, and 6,700 audio visuals. There's also more than 30 electronic databases for reference sources and periodicals, along with approximately 93,000 e-book titles. There's also an interlibrary loan that gives faculty and students access to a national network of libraries.
