Oral Roberts University was founded as a result of the evangelist Oral Roberts' obeying God's mandate to build a university on God's authority and the Holy Spirit. God's commission to Oral Roberts was to "Raise up your students to hear My voice, to go where My light is dim, where My voice is heard small, and My healing power is not known, even to the uttermost bounds of the earth. Their work will exceed yours, and in this I am well pleased." Oral Roberts University is a charismatic university, founded in the fires of evangelism and upon the unchanging precepts of the bible. The Board of Regents and the president and chief executive officer are dedicated to upholding the University's founding purpose.

Oral Roberts University (ORU) in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a member of the Council of Christian colleges and Universities (CCCU). ORU welcomes students from all ethnic backgrounds within the United States and around the world. Students come from all 50 states and have come from more than 130 countries. ORU is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), a group of 95 Christ-centered colleges and universities located in 29 states and Canada. The members represent more than 33 different denominations and evangelical affiliations. Each semester, ORU accepts about 30-50 students who show potential but come from backgrounds that do not offer the educational opportunities typical of most young people preparing for college. The CLC, housed on the fifth floor of the library, provides student tutors with training, computers, self-guided skills programs, and a setting conducive to learning.
