Oregon Health and Science University was created in 1887 and is now a leading health and research university in Oregon and around the U.S. OHSU is focused on patient care, education, research, and community service.

This is the state's only health and research university. Its mission is to improve the well-being and health for all Oregonians. The university is able to achieve its mission by bringing together patient care, education, and research. In addition, the university is known for assessing health care shortages in every region of the state.

Oregon Health and Science University operates five schools, including the school of medicine, School of nursing, School of Dentistry, School of Science and engineering, and the School of Pharmacy. It's the only university in Oregon that can grant doctoral degrees in nursing, medicine, and dentistry. Oregon Health and Science University is also the only academic health center in the U.S. that has a school of science and engineering that is centered on human environmental health.

Oregon Health and Science University offers several educational programs and curriculum throughout the state. These programs are attended by more than 17,000 medical professionals each year who sign up for courses and seminars.

For continuing medical education, the School of Medicine has more than 80 continuing medical education programs offered each year. It also serves more than 9,000 attendees on an annual basis. There are many hands-on seminars and workshops provided by the School of Nursing for the continuing nursing education. The school also has the Northwest Nursing Education Institute that gives nurses from around the region a chance to meet and hone their skills as nurses. The Continuing Community Healthcare Education has the Child Care Development and Rehabilitation Center. This program gives students a chance to work with students with special needs and their families. The Center for Professional Development at the School of Science and Engineering is geared for people who want to learn more about courses and seminars.
