The
Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences is a new
medical school that will educate primary care physicians. Located in Yakima, Washington, the
Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences was created to serve the underserved counties in the Pacific Northwest. In Washington State, 38 of the 39 counties are considered medically underserved. It's the university's hope that the primary care physicians trained at the Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences will serve the rural counties in which they live in a five-state area: Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Alaska.
The Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences is approved to train 75 new physicians per year beginning in August 2008. The response to the opening of Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences has been tremendous. The average number of applications per seat is 20 and the Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences received 27 applications per seat. Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences is the first new medical school in the Pacific Northwest in 60 years and will award Doctorate Degrees in Osteopathic Medicine.
Prospective students wishing to apply to the Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences must have a Bachelor's degree prior to admission. Students with undergraduate degrees from colleges and universities in the Northwest will be given preferred treatment. Students from outside of the Pacific Northwest will be considered as long as they live in a rural area with a dedication to serving a rural or underserved population. Students must also complete the MCAT exam and be at least 18 years of age.
The Yakima Valley of Washington is in a mild climate with a myriad of outdoor activities from which to choose within an hour's drive. These activities include fly-fishing, mountain climbing, biking, hiking and other outdoor sports. On a clear day, Mt. Rainier can be seen in the skyline. Student housing is not available, but students have the option of many affordable rental units, including off-season lake homes and vacation rentals.

Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences is provisionally accredited by the Commission of Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association.
Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences is authorized by the Washington Higher education Coordinating Board and meets the requirements and minimum educational standards established for degree-granting institutions under the Degree Authorization Act.
