Patrick Henry community college, one of the Virginia community colleges, was founded in 1962 as a two-year branch of the University of Virginia's School of General Studies, and became an autonomous two-year college of the university two years later. The college enrolled its first students in the old Northside Elementary School in Martinsville and moved to its present campus in the fall of 1969 with the completion of the administration building.

The Learning Resource Center was completed in the spring of 1071, and the college became part of the Virginia community college system on July 1, 1971. Serving Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County, and the southern portion of Franklin County, Patrick Henry Community College is a comprehensive open-door institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Patrick Henry Community College offers 26 associate's degree programs, 13 certificate programs and 52 career studies certificate programs. Patrick Henry Community College also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industrial certifications, literacy/ESL classes, developmental and personal enrichment courses, and GED. Patrick Henry Community College hosts the Piedmont Governor's School, Virginia's Philpott Manufacturing Extension Partnership and Old Dominion University's TeleTechNet, which offers 18 undergraduate and 8 graduate programs through distance learning.
