A private college based in Oakland, Calif., close to the San Francisco Bay, Patten University was founded in 1944 by the Christian Evangelical Church and offers students an education based on Judeo-Christian values. Originally named the Oakland Bible Institute, the school was later renamed for its founder, Dr. Bebe Patten.
Patten University is a Christian-based
liberal arts college and at its founding, offered degree programs primarily in ministry. The school expanded to offer a broader education to those interested in an education beyond the ministry. Patten University now offers more than 15 undergraduate programs in areas of study, which include Art, Biblical Studies, Organizational Management and Youth Ministry. The Graduate School of Professional Studies offers a Master of Arts in Education and The School of Extended and Continuing Education provides
certificate programs, job skills training as well as baccalaureate programs. Patten University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Over 10 years ago, Patten University became a "Church of God Institution," aligning itself as an affiliate university with the Church of God, Cleveland, Tenn.
The 5-acre main campus is located in a park-like setting in the Fruitvale-Coolidge Avenue residential district. Patten University strives to provide a balance between a student's educational, social and spiritual life while attending the school and they offer a wide variety of athletics and activities.
Students can either live on campus at one of the three residential halls or off campus.

Patten University currently offers women's softball and men's baseball and is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The school competes against other NAIA schools, as well as schools in the NCAA and Christian colleges.
Patten University offers athletic scholarships to qualified students and is considering expanding its athletics program to include basketball and soccer.
The Harold and Dorothy Blumenthal Library at Patten University is home to more than 33,000 books, 180 periodicals in print, as well as 52 online journal databases. The library also has an audiovisual, computerized music and language lab, as well as a computer lab and learning resource center.
For a small annual fee, Patten University students may use the libraries at nearby University of California at Berkeley as well as the Graduate Theological Union, the world's largest center of ecumenical theological education.
