Since
IT was established in 1940, Perry
technical institute (
PTI) has been training students for careers in technology and the industrial arts. PTI is a private, non-profit school that offers career-oriented training and
education programs in
automotive technology, electrical technology, graphic technology, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), information technology and communication systems, instrumentation and industrial automation, machine technology, and computer applications and office administration. Perry Technical Institute also recently added a program in medical office administration.
Training at Perry Technical Institute is practical and hands-on. PTI Students in the automotive technology program, for example, train in shops on campus, as well as in dealer service departments, independent garages and other sites. During the third quarter of the 12-month program automotive technology Perry Technical students may participate in paid externships. After completing their studies, they are prepared for positions as entry-level technicians in the automotive industry. Perry Technical Institute's graphic technology program teaches students how to use the latest graphics software and includes assignments similar to those that they will eventually complete in the workplace. During the 18-month program, Perry students are members of the Yakima Advertising Federation and the International Sign Association, which provides networking opportunities and chances to participate in competitions.
Students in Perry Technical Institute's information technology and communication systems program study everything from AC/DC electronics and solid-state theory to voice telephony and computer data networking. Perry Technical Institute's 24-month program in instrumentation and industrial automation prepares students for entry-level jobs as industrial technician. In classes and lab sessions, electricity, electronics, applied physics and calculus are all discussed. Students in this program are encouraged to join the Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society and participate in the organization's meetings and trade shows.
Perry Technical Institute also offers a combined Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree with
Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC). Students complete specialized training at PTI and additional coursework at YVCC that prepares them for jobs and career advancement. Students in the program, who may complete their YVCC classes before, during or after they finish their courses at Perry Technical Institute, can earn an AAS degree in electrical technology, graphic technology, instrumentation and industrial electronics, machine technology, refrigeration, air conditioning and heating technology, and telecommunication technology.
