Founded in 1963 by Russell K. Pitzer, Pitzer College, located in Claremont, Calif., just 35 miles east of Los Angles, is a private undergraduate college and is part of the Claremont Colleges consortium. As one of seven colleges in that system, Pitzer College students have the benefit of access to the resources to all the colleges in the consortium. Other colleges that are a part of the Claremont College consortium are Pomona College, Claremont Graduate University, Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, and the Keck Graduate Institute for Applied Life Sciences.

Pitzer College was the fifth college to join the consortium at its founding in 1963. The college has been co-educational since 1970.

True to the heritage of a college founded during the 1960s, Pitzer College is a liberal arts and science minded school that emphasizes intercultural education and global diversity with an emphasis placed on social responsibility and community service. The student body is comprised of over 950 students of diverse backgrounds from all over the United States and over 230 countries.

Pitzer College offers over 40 degree programs, mixing classroom study with a unique blend of work in the field, as well as participating in community service - which is a part of the requirements at Pitzer. Students do not complete required classes for their degrees. Rather, they work with advisors, who counsel them in Educational Objectives, which includes studying issues in at least two cultures and two disciplines. Students are also encouraged to participate in one of Pitzer's External Studies Programs.
