Portsmouth beauty school of Hair Design was founded in 1961 to train students for careers in Cosmetology. The cosmetology course at Portsmouth Beauty School of Hair Design prepares students to take the New Hampshire State Board exam and become a licensed cosmetologist. After graduating, Portsmouth Beauty students are prepared for entry-level careers in the beauty industry.

In class, Portsmouth Beauty School of Hair Design students study under the supervision of trained instructors. In addition to cosmetology fundamentals (such as hair styling and coloring, chemistry of the hair, makeup and facials) students receive instruction in related subjects such as personal hygiene, public health, anatomy, bacteriology, salon ethics, salesmanship and psychology. After completing their initial training and practicing on mannequins, students have the opportunity to work with paying clients in the school's full-service clinic. This gives Portsmouth Beauty School of Hair Design students the chance to perfect both their cosmetology and interpersonal skills under the supervision of a qualified instructor.

Before enrolling at Portsmouth Beauty School of Hair Design, applicants have a personal interview with an admissions coordinator. Three references and an entrance questionnaire are also required. Portsmouth Beauty School of Hair Design, a private, independent institution, admits between 40 and 65 students every year. Federal financial aid is available for qualified students. In addition, Portsmouth Beauty School of Hair Design awards the Leola "Lee" Pierson Scholarship in honor of Pierson, an alumna who passed away in 2006. Most students choose to study full-time, but flexible schedules are available to students with specific needs. The school is closed on weekends and eight national holidays.
