Also known as Big Sandy Community and Technical College, Prestonburg community college specializes in providing learning experiences for those preparing for immediate entry into the workforce upon graduation, those looking to segue into a four-year university, and community members who are lifelong learners. With campuses in four locations (Prestonburg, Paintsville, Pikeville, and Hager Hill), this school serves a wide community of learners. From children's summer drama camps to personal development courses for senior adult learners, Big Sandy Community and Technical College offers something for every type of learner.

Though Prestonburg Community College makes a big impact, classes here are small. The school currently offers associate degree programs in General Studies, Computer-Aided Drafting, Criminal Justice, Human Services, and Information Technology as well as diploma programs in automotive Technology, Information Technology, business Studies, and Health Occupations. In addition to programs offered on-campus, Big Sandy also offers specialized diploma and certificate programs through the Kentucky Coal Academy. Designed to attract more miners to the area, the KY Coal Academy provides workforce training in two locations.

Prestonburg Community College students are invited to take part in the college's Cooperative Education program. Designed to provide on-the-job training to supplement in-class learning, Cooperative Ed students take on a paid part-time job in addition to their on-campus studies and graduate with a resume full of experience. Self-motivated qualified students looking to jump ahead can also enroll in the school's Honors Program. Honors Program students receive access to smaller classes, Honors-only scholarship opportunities, and access to specialized volunteer programs. Prestonburg also hosts a wide array of student organizations and performing arts groups, including a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honors fraternity for community college students.

For full-time incoming freshman, Prestonburg Community College provides a one-credit transition course designed to help integrate you into your new college lifestyle. Other support services Prestonburg Community College offers include career assessments and counseling, faculty mentoring, financial aid advising, personal counseling, tutoring, and workforce readiness courses.

This year Big Sandy Community and Technical College hosts of the Big Sandy Idol music competition for high school students. Student singers from sixteen high schools will compete for a demo CD recording, a $1,200 vocal scholarship to attend BSCTC, and a spot with the Big Sandy Singers.

Big Sandy Community and Technical College is home to four performing arts groups as well as children's theatre workshops, community theatre troupes, and a school-wide Big Sandy Stars Talent Showcase.

Exceptional high school students looking to get ahead in their educational path are welcome to enroll in the school's dual enrollment program where they can earn both high school and college credit.

Prestonburg Community College's Wellness Center offers programs to nurture physical as well as mental, spiritual, and emotional wellness of its students.
