Graduates are prepared to assisted veterinarians in a wide variety of tasks, including animal handling and administering
medicine. There are three programs of study at the Professional Veterinary Assistant School, and students can opt for a course that can be completed in three-, 12- or 16-months.
The three-month program at the Professional Veterinary Assistant School prepares students for jobs as veterinary attendants. This course is aimed at individuals who have little or no experience in the world of small animal
nursing. Professional Veterinary Assistant School students learn about grooming and feeding patients, and will also be able to help doctors and veterinary technicians before basic diagnostic tests. The 12-month course of study at Professional Veterinary Assistant School trains students for careers as a veterinary doctor's assistant, veterinary receptionist or technician's assistant. Individuals who hope to enroll in this program must be employed by a licensed California veterinarian. It is also recommended that students have completed the veterinary attendant program at Professional Veterinary Assistant School. Students in this program who have at least 32 months of experience in a veterinary clinic setting may be eligible to take the last semester of the alternate route veterinary technician candidate program, the school's most advanced course of study. The alternate route veterinary technician candidate program prepares students to take the California state licensing exam and practice as a registered veterinary technician. The program takes a total of 16 months to complete. Professional Veterinary Assistant School also offers a program in advanced veterinary
nursing. This course is open to students who have already earned an undergraduate degree in a field related to animal science. Graduates of foreign veterinary schools who have at least 12 months of experience working for a California vet may also enroll in this program.
Faculty members at the Professional Veterinary Assistant School are all veterinarians, registered veterinary technicians or other experts in their fields. Area specialists regularly visit the campus of the Professional Veterinary Assistant School, where they deliver lectures on topics such as dentistry, cardiology, surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology, exotic animal medicine and veterinary anesthesia.
