Queen City College in Clarksville, Tennessee was established in 1984 by Ralph S. Payne. Payne was a long-time barber and salon owner in the Clarksville area who was dissatisfied with the quality of education his new employees had received. His solution to the problem? He opened Queen City College, a vocational training school that prepares students for careers in the Cosmetology field. Queen City College has outgrown its facilities twice since it was founded; today, it offers programs in cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, Nail Technology and other subjects and every year about 200 students enroll in the school's various program. The mission of Queen City College is to prepare highly trained graduates who are ready for professional careers in the beauty and barbering industries.

Queen City College offers a wide range of programs to its students, including: barber, barber technician, barber instructor, cosmetology to barber training, barber to cosmetology training, cosmetology, cosmetology instructor, esthetician, manicure/nail tech, natural hairstylist and shampoo. No matter what program they enroll in, students at Queen City College receive hands-on, personalized instruction in all aspects of cosmetology. Each student is exposed to the latest in styles and techniques, and learns about the most up-to-date equipment and technical skills. Students receive real-world practice by performing services for clients in the school's salon. Beauty services provided by Queen City students (under the supervision of instructors) include: hair cuts, hair styling, coloring, straightening, perming, weaves, manicures and pedicures, waxing, tanning and microdermabrasion. The program is designed to produce technically skilled graduates, but also encourages every student's personal development and growth. All graduates of Queen City College are prepared to take relevant state board exams in order to earn state licensure. Queen City College is also committed to helping students succeed in their chosen career. Current students and alumni both have access to the school's job placement services. Graduates of Queen City College may find employment as salon or barbershop owners, magazine stylists, image consultants, coordinating bridal party hair and makeup, developing unique products and treatments, or providing makeovers. Queen City College is affiliated with a number of professional organizations, including the National Hairdressers and Cosmetologist Association, the Tennessee cosmetology school Owners Association and the Tennessee Educational Council.
