Quincy University

1800 College Avenue
Quincy, IL 62301

Grounded in Franciscan values of respect and social justice, Quincy University is a private school offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Franciscan friars arriving from Germany in the 1850s founded Quincy University in 1860. The friars believed there was a need for education in early Illinois and thought the best way to provide that is in the form of a liberal arts education in the Franciscan Catholic tradition.

Although the college changed its name from Francis Solanus College (named for a Hispanic missionary), the tradition of the missionary spirit is still present on the campus today. The original school was founded as an all-men's college, but women were admitted in 1932. Known as Quincy College since 1970, the school officially changed its name in 1993 to Quincy University.

Today, Quincy University offers over 70 degree programs in seven schools, which include behavioral and social sciences, business, education, fine arts and communication, humanities, professional studies and science and technology. Degrees are also offered in Aviation and aviation management.

The motto of the residency program at Quincy University is "Welcome Home." The residency staff encourages students who live on campus to live in their community by participating in activities and not just to stay in their rooms. There are five residence halls on campus, as well as a number of apartments and houses, which are available mostly to upperclassmen.

The town of Quincy, Ill., is located 150 miles from St. Louis and approximately 300 miles from Chicago. However, cultural activities and internship opportunities can be found much closer in this quaint town that sits on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River.
