Based in Chicago, Rush University Hospital was founded more than 170 years ago and is one of the most recognized names in academic medicine. Rush medical College was established in 1837. In 1969, St. Luke's Hospital (1864) and Presbyterian Hospital (1883), merged with Rush, creating Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital. Rush University was created as the academic link to the hospital in 1972. In 2007, Rush University Hospital, was named by U.S. News and World Report as having more specialties than any other hospital in Illinois. University Health System Consortium also ranked Rush among the top five medical centers in the nation.

Rush University has four schools: Rush Medical College, the College of nursing, College of Health Sciences and the Graduate College. Annual enrollment has swelled from more than 100 when the school was founded 36 years ago, to more than 1,500 students per year. More than 11,000 medical related degrees have been awarded.

Students interested in any one of a number of medical related degrees can choose from over 25 degrees, including nursing degrees (through doctorate), clinical laboratory sciences, vascular ultrasound technology, occupational therapy, anatomy and cell biology, as well as medical doctorate degree. Continuing education for nurses and doctors is also available.

Over 245 students can choose to live in campus housing. Center Court Gardens is an apartment building offering studio, one and two bedroom apartments in the medical district of downtown Chicago.

  • The Rush University Office of Community Service matches students to clinical and non-clinical community services programs in the greater Chicago area.

  • Rush University Medical Center Employee Wellness programs offer Rush students the opportunity to participate in yoga and pilates. The Union Station Fitness Formula Club is an affilate of the medical center and offers state-of-the-art fitness facilities that include a swimming pool, basketball courts, weights, cardiovascular equipment and a juice bar. Students are also welcome to use the UIC Student Center West Facility on the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. Rush University students may be eligible for a partial refund on fitness fees.

  • There are over 30 student clubs and organizations on campus, which include professional organizations.

  • Alumni of Rush University practice medicine in all 50 states and more than 10 foreign countries.

  • Rush University Medical Center is currently undergoing a renovation and building addition. A new hospital, orthopedic ambulatory building and power plant will offer state-of-the-art technology to its students and staff.
