Listed by National Faculty Productivity Index as one of the country's top urban public research universities, Rutgers University Newark is part of the Rutgers University system in New Jersey. The school traces its roots back to 1908 when the New Jersey Law School was established. Over the next three decades, the school partnered with Newark--
Dana College, the Newark Institute of Arts & Sciences, the Seth Boyden School of
business and the Mercer Beasley School of Law. The mergers created the University of Newark. Finally, in 1946, the school became a part of Rutgers University.
U.S. News and World Report named the university as the most diverse university in the nation for eleven years. Known for its rich cultural, ethnic, religious and racial diverse campus, Rutgers University Newark has a reputation for educating many first generation college students from the working class and urban areas in New Jersey. The 37-acre campus is located in downtown Newark adjacent to 5 other area campuses with more than 35,000 students.
In the past, Rutgers University Newark was known mostly as a commuter college, but in recent years, the college has sought to become more of a residential campus. Students may choose to live in one of several residence halls or apartments, including the new University Square. University Square accommodates over 600 students and was the first new residence hall built in the last decade. More than 1,200 Rutgers University Newark students live on campus.
Rutgers University Newark students may choose from over 40 degree fields at one of the six schools. The schools consists of: Newark College of Arts and Sciences, College of
nursing, the School of Criminal Justice, Rutgers School of Law - Newark,
Rutgers Business School, Graduate School - Newark and the School of Public Affairs and Administration.

Rutgers University Rutgers is a NCAA Division III school offering one dozen sports teams. Intramural athletics are also on campus.
