Established in 1772, Salem College, located in Winston-Salem,
North Carolina, is one of the oldest women's colleges in the
United States. This private,
liberal arts college was started by the Moravians, a Protestant group from central Europe. Today, over 1,100 women from all over globe travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to attend this distinguished women's college.
Salem College has a long history of promoting women's independence. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, African-American and Native American women were also educated at this college. This tradition of diversity continues to this day. Eighteen percent of the student body are international students and 25 percent are students of color.
Salem College offers four undergraduate and two graduate degree programs. Undergraduate fields of study include
business administration, creative writing, interior design, medical technology, religion and not-for-profit management. The graduate degree programs focus on the disciplines of teaching and education. This women's college was the first in the state to have a master's degree program in teacher licensure that allows future teachers to teach children from birth to kindergarten.
