For more than 150-years, students have been bewitched with Salem state university, located on the North shore of Massachusetts overlooking Salem Harbor. Founded as a women's teaching college in 1854, Salem state university was the 4th in the state of Massachusetts and the 10th in the nation founded by Horace Mann, a humanitarian that believed that providing a quality education for teachers would improve the quality of public education for all.

After enrollment declined during the Civil War, the campus began accepting men in 1898. The school began offering a four-year education in 1921, but didn't begin growing until the middle of the 20th century. Today, Salem State University educates more than 10,000 students per year.

Students have the choice of attending one of more than 30 undergraduate programs, which include accounting and finance, music nursing, occupational therapy, economics, speech education, social work, theatre, English and fire science. Graduate students may choose one of more than 50 programs in a master of arts, Master of Arts in teaching, Master of Science, master of social work, master of education or one of the professional licensure or certificate programs.

Students at Salem State University may choose to live on campus at one of four complexes and halls that houses more than 1,400 students. Bowditch, Central Campus and Peabody Halls are traditional dorm style rooms. Apartments in the Bates Complex include their own bedrooms and kitchens. Students may also choose to live off campus. The city of Salem welcomes more than 1 million visitors per year and there is a wealth of history and culture within the city.

On campus, the Center for Creative and Performing Arts offers a wide variety of special events in theatre, dance, music, creative writing and art for students. The center presents about 100 events per year, which affords students many opportunities for culture and arts without having to leave campus.
