San Francisco School of Massage was established in 1970. Since then, Therapeutic Massage has become an essential part of complementary care and the Massage School has responded to new massage regulations by further developing its program to meet these new requirements. The school of massage offers six massage therapy programs, a workshop series, and continuing education workshops.

San Francisco School of Massage offers basic practitioner certifications in Swedish massage and Zen Shiatsu. The Zen Shiatsu massage practitioner program teaches students techniques for addressing all 14 major meridians in a 60- or 90-minute full body session. Students learn energy movement, basic principles of tradition Chinese medicine, fundamentals of human anatomy and kinesiology, body mechanics, and mindfulness of breath awareness and therapeutic touch.

If students decide to build on the basic certification programs, they can take workshops to become massage therapists, body work therapists, Shiatsu therapists, and Asian bodywork therapists. The massage therapist program is an intermediate program that teaches students about muscle function with palpation, visual assessment, communication skills, and marketing. The bodywork therapist program includes deep tissue massage and myofascial release, techniques for treating common injuries, trigger point therapy, ortho-bionomy, subtle energy modalities, integration and mentoring, hands-on practice, advanced anatomy, and business skills. The Shiatsu therapist program teaches students to develop treatment strategies that help clients regain energetic harmony. The advanced Asian bodywork therapist program is an advanced series of workshops that gives students theoretical understanding, heightened evaluation skills, and proficiency in developing treatment strategies. San Francisco School of Massage also offers a continuing education workshop series that includes a variety of massage workshops.
