School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa provides the instruction, tools, environment and resources needed for students to develop their signature style as well as enhance their photography skills. The school prepares students to exceed industry standards and have successful and rewarding careers in photography.

School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa's portfolio program consists of three levels: level 1- photographic foundations, level 2- portfolio development, and level 3- directed research and production. The level 1-photographic foundation is the most structured level of the portfolio program. Course content is delivered through photo genre modules. Formal lectures and demonstrations are held 14 hours a week, and students are expected to put in self-directed production hours. Level 2-portfolio development is self-directed and more centered on portfolio production. Level 3- directed research and production is an optional year for graduates to solidify the direction of their photographic practice. Level 3 students are also encouraged to participate in the level 1 and 2 auteurs classes, workshops, demonstrations and field trips which are in line with their research and areas of exploration.

  • School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa's facilities consist of a multi-format darkroom for silver gelatin and alternative printmaking; a wet dry daylight production and mounting area; a state of the art ink jet printing facility including a large flatbed scanner and fully-calibrated monitors; industry standard lighting and support equipment in a daylight studio; electronic classroom and wireless Internet access; equipment storage and loan pool; student lockers; reference library; common area; and gallery and exhibition spaces.
