Scratch DJ Academy provides education and training to amateur DJ's and music enthusiasts. Students learn the art of being a DJ and receive instruction from world famous DJ instructors. The Academy was founded in 2002 by Rob Principe, Reg E. Gaines, and the late Jam Master Jay. Scratch DJ Academy-NYC is centrally located in Greenwich Village between 9th and 10th streets.


Scratch DJ Academy-NYC offers seven levels of courses. Course 101 is for students who have never used a set of turntables. The 151 course is for students who know the basics and want to enhance their blending and mixing skills and learn new techniques. The 1NT course combines courses 101 and 151 into an extended 10-week course. Students learn to perfect their technique and have the opportunity to put together a four- to six-minute mix. The 152 course focuses on enhancing students' mixing skills in a real club setting and teaches them mixing tricks. Course 202 is for students who want to learn to scratch. Course 303 is for experienced DJs interested in learning advanced scratch techniques. BM 101 is an introductory beat making course, ideal for students interested in music production. Students receive instruction on Reason and Ableton Live 4.0 at their own workstations, which are equipped with an Alienware Ozma laptop.

  • The academy has no age requirement to take a class at Scratch. Students have ranged from 8 to 60 years old.


  • Scratch gives currents students free practice time during the week between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. For those who are not Scratch students, Scratch offers memberships which allow non-students the opportunity to come in and practice on a set of turntables.


  • Class sizes range from 12 to 30 students. Each class is taught by an instructor and teaching assistants to ensure every student receives hands-on instruction.


  • Graduates of Scratch DJ Academy receive certificates of completion at the end of the semester.


  • Private lessons and classes are available. Private lessons range from $75 to $100, and classes range from $300 to $500.


  • Scratch DJ Academy also sells professional equipment to students and non-students. They also offer special beginner to advanced equipment packages.
