Scripps College, located on a 30-acre campus about 35 miles east of Los Angeles in Claremont, Calif. is the only all women's school part of the Claremont Consortium of colleges. The other schools in the group are Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, Pomona College, Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute. As 1 of 7 colleges in that system, Pitzer College students have the benefit of access to the resources to all the colleges in the consortium. This includes access to more than 2 million print volumes of books in the combined libraries. The library at Scripps alone contains more than 110,000 volumes of books and more than 10,000 books in its rare book collection.

Ellen Browning Scripps founded the college when she was 96 years of age in 1926. The educator, publisher and philanthropist saw Scripps College and the Claremont College Consortium as a new adventure. Classes beganin 1927 and the first women graduated from Scripps College in 1931.

Nearly 900 students per year attend Scripps College. The school offers more than 20 degree programs.

Students who wish to study abroad have a variety of countries from which to choose. In 2007, more than 70 Scripps students studied in over 26 countries which included: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Chile, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Mali, Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Scotland, Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania, and Vietnam.

  • A majority of the students at Scripps College are from California, but Scripps hosts students from other states including Washington, Oregon and Arizona.
