Founded in 1865, Shaw University was the first college in the south to educate African-Americans. Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, this historically black university is a private, liberal arts institution for both undergraduate and graduate students. It is co-educational and affiliated with the Baptist Church. Over 2,700 students from the United States and around the world attend Shaw University.

Shaw University is made up of two colleges and one school: the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Graduate and Professional Studies and the Shaw Divinity School. This historically black university offers over 30 undergraduate majors within its 10 departments. All of Shaw's academic programs are designed with the employment market in mind.

This North Carolina university aims to graduate students who have proven their competence in their selected areas of study. Shaw University's mission is to cultivate students' character and intellectual development. The historically black university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Association of Colleges and Schools.

  • Every year, Shaw University awards associate, bachelor's and master's degrees to students.

  • The Shaw Divinity School at Shaw University is one of the few divinity schools in North Carolina to have full accreditation with the Association of Theological Schools.

  • The North Carolina university is known as the mother of African-American colleges in the state. Several graduates went on to establish other universities in North Carolina, including Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State Universities and North Carolina Central.

  • Shaw University organizes at least four formal gatherings each academic year. These are mandatory for freshmen and first year students. The gatherings include fall convocation, Founder's Day, honors convocation and spring convocation.

  • Shaw University graduated its first class in 1878. The first medical degrees were awarded in 1886, and the first law degrees were awarded in 1890.
