Shear Ego International School was founded by Gene Cardomon, as a response to the challenges he faced, when trying to staff his four salons with well-skilled, creative stylists. His desire to improve the talent in the hair industry led him to implement a training program, in which students shadowed a stylist for a year before venturing out on their own. The school's training style was revolutionary and has produced many successful salon professionals.

Shear Ego International School offers Cosmetology, barber/styling, esthetics, nail specialty, waxing and refresher programs. The hairdresser and cosmetology program trains students in all aspects of cosmetology through 1,000 hours of extensive cosmetology training. The barber and styling program assists students in becoming Master Barbers. This 600-hour program exposes students to all aspects of barbering. The esthetics, skin care and makeup program provides 600 hours of esthetician classroom and workshop experience. The nail specialty program teaches students to be proficient at manicuring and pedicuring. This program consists of 250 hours of classroom and workshop training. The waxing program provides 75 hours of training in the latest waxing techniques. The refresher program is designed for those who need more experience preparing for the New York State Physical Board Examination. The refresher program is offered in cosmetology, nail specialty, barber, and esthetics.

Financial assistance is available to students who qualify. The financial aid programs available to students include Federal Pell Grants, Sallie Mae Career Training Loan, and high school senior scholarships.

The hairdressing and cosmetology program costs $11,800 and can be taken part-time or full-time. The day program takes seven and a half months and the evening program lasts 13 months.

The barber and styling program can be completed in four and a half months and costs $8,600.

Tuition for the esthetics program is $7,400 and takes four and a half months.

Students can complete the nail specialty program in eight weeks, with day classes, or 14 weeks, with evening classes. Tuition is $2,641.

Students can expect to pay $775 for the waxing program. Refresher courses are $10 per hour.
