Prior to closing its doors in July of 2007, Sheldon Jackson
college was a four-year private,
liberal arts college in Sitka, Alaska. Established in 1878, the
Alaska college was one of the oldest colleges in the state of Alaska. Originally called Sitka Industrial and
Training School, it was renamed Sheldon Jackson College in 1910.
Before closing down, Sheldon Jackson College enrolled about 100 full-time and close to 200 part-time students. Over 25 percent of the student body at the Alaska college were Alaska Natives. Because of its tiny enrollment numbers, Sheldon Jackson College offered an intimate, close-knit community atmosphere. Most classes had five or six students and some upper level classes only had one or two students.
Sheldon Jackson College has a history of financial trouble. It officially closed in July of 2007. At the time, the Alaska college was $6 million in debt.
