Sierra Nevada college is located on an 18-acre pine tree campus in the Tahoe region of Nevada, in the village of Incline. The college was founded with the idea in mind to acquaint students with the surrounding Tahoe region and to integrate the school with the environment.

The school was established in 1969. Since its founding nearly four decades ago, the school has maintained steady growth in student population, course offerings and campus growth. The school currently offers undergraduate degree programs in 14 areas of study in four schools: Science and Technology, humanities and Social Science, Management, and fine arts. In all, Sierra Nevada college offers a total of more than 30 majors, minors and certificates. The school also offers a graduate-level degree program in education.
Sierra Nevada College was named by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top 20 comprehensive western colleges in the country.

Sierra Nevada College's motto is "This is my life. This is my college." The motto is meant to depict the relationship of the students with the Tahoe region that surrounds them. It is no surprise that many Sierra Nevada College students participate in a wide range of extreme and outdoor sports such as mountain biking, kayaking, hiking and rock climbing. Snow sports are also popular among Sierra Nevada students. These sports include snow skiing, boarding and sledding. One of the residence halls even provides a ski tuning area. The ski and snowboarding teams at Sierra Nevada College both hold USCSA national championship titles.

There are two residence halls on campus in which freshman and sophomores are expected to stay. Both of the residence halls offer spectacular views of the surrounding area, as well as many amenities. Students who are over 21 years old may stay off campus.
