Simon Fraser University was founded in 1965.
SFU was named after the explorer but acquired the nickname "Instant University" because it moved from the idea stage to a nearly completed campus with 2,500 students in just two and a half years. SFU has expanded to three campuses--Burnaby, Vancouver and Surrey--and its 25,000 students are attended by more than 700 tenure-track faculty. The main campus, designed by award-winning architects, is situated on Burnaby Mountain with great views of the Burrard Inlet, the Coast Mountains, the Fraser River and Vancouver Harbour.
Simon Fraser University was the first university in the country to offer academic courses year-round on a trimester system. Accepted students can begin degree programs or take single classes during the fall, spring or summer semester. More than 100 programs across six faculties--applied sciences, arts and social sciences,
business administration,
education, health sciences and science--are available to SFU students, combining various areas of study.
Simon Fraser University fields 12 varsity sports teams, competing in men's and women's basketball, cross country, soccer, swimming, track and field and wrestling, as well as football, volleyball and softball. SFU teams compete in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport League and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics where they have the chance to face teams from the
United States.
