Located on a 269-acre campus 50 miles north of San Francisco, Sonoma State University is a nearly 50-year-old institution in the
California State University system. Sonoma State University calls itself the "small campus with big ideas." More than 8,500 students enroll in the college each year.
Sonoma State University is frequently listed by the Princeton Review as a "Best Value College," it has also been named as one of the "most wired" campuses by Forbes magazine. Known as one of 25 of the "Public Ivies" because of its affiliation with the Council of Public
liberal arts Colleges, Sonoma State University is the only
California college that is a member of that group.
Sonoma University offers a number of degree programs in 6 schools: School of Arts and Humanities, School of
business and Economics, School of Education, School of Extended Education, School of Science and Technology, School of Social Sciences.
Sonoma State University may be located on a small-sized campus, but the facilities and other land owned by the university gives students a big opportunity for learning. The library, The Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center, named for the famous cartoonist, has one of the largest print volume collections in the CSU system. The information center has more than 400,000 printed volumes, as well as an automated retrieval system of more than 750,000 volumes. That system is one of only four in the
United States. A collection of Jack London's writings and other personal belongings are just one of the special collections owned by the library.
In addition to a wealth of information to be found on campus, Sonoma State University also owns the Fairfield Osborn Preserve, a nearby 411-acre nature
Conservatory and Gal breath Wildlife Preserve, a 3,200 inhabitant preserve. These holdings allow students to study environmental nature and science in the field. The Environmental Technology Center on campus is a learning center for those concerned with saving energy for future generations.
Nearly 25 percent, or more than 2,400 of all of Sonoma's students live in one of the residence halls or apartments on campus.

Sonoma State University regularly accepts all students who live within their service region. However, more than 80 percent of the freshman, and more than 50 percent junior transfer students live outside of the North Bay area.
Sonoma State University's 59,000 square foot recreation center allows students the opportunity to maintain their physical fitness by using the climbing wall, gymnasium, fitness center, dance studio or weights.
The Green Music Center is the newest addition to the Sonoma State University campus and will be open soon. The center is designed to be one of the premier music halls in northern California.
