Established in 1896, South Carolina State University is a public, historically black co-educational university that is devoted to giving undergraduate and graduate students a quality education at an affordable price. The
South Carolina university was founded as a public college for black students, and today, the
historically black university also welcomes white students. Although South Carolina State University welcomes diversity, it has kept its character as a historically black university.

Because of the small class sizes and a 17 to one student-faculty ratio, South Carolina State University allows students to have the personal attention they need to excel in their courses. More than 80 percent of the faculty have terminal degrees in their area of study.
