Established in 1881, South Dakota State University is a public, co-educational university in Brookings, South Dakota. As the biggest university in the state of South Dakota, it enrolls over 11,400 students. The South Dakota university offers a diverse campus experience and is situated near the Minnesota border. It is only an hour's drive from Sioux Falls, one of the biggest cities in South Dakota.

South Dakota State University offers students over 200 majors and minors. In addition, students are given many opportunities for "hands-on" experience. The South Dakota university has one of the highest student retention rates in the country. Over 70 percent of the professors have doctorate or terminal degrees in their field.

South Dakota State University system is comprised of eight smaller colleges: the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education and Counseling, the College of engineering, the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, the College of General Studies, the College of nursing and the College of Pharmacy.
