Southeast Missouri State University was founded in 1873 as a teacher's college. Today, Southeast Missouri State University is a comprehensive school located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, offering a wide range of programs in several different schools.

The center Southeast Missouri State University's campus is a copper-domed hall, Academic Hall, which sits on the highest point of the town. The hall was built on the site of a Civil War fort and was constructed to replace another school that was destroyed by fire. The building was originally home to the entire Southeast Missouri State University campus, housing classes, a library and a gymnasium.

Southeast Missouri State University offers more than 200 areas of undergraduate study, some of which include: accounting, archeology, environmental science, fashion merchandising, family studies, public administration, public relations, theatre and dance and zoology. The School of Graduate Studies also offers Master's degrees, education specialist degrees and through a partnership with the University of Missouri, doctorate degrees.

Students can choose to live on campus and there seems to be a style of living for every student's taste. Students at Southeast Missouri State University can live in historic buildings that have unique layouts, or new, state-of-the-art buildings constructed within the past decade. There are eight residence halls on campus, as well as several Greek houses.

Southeast Missouri State University has several study abroad programs from which students can choose to gain international experience. Students can choose programs in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, as well as Japan. The school is a member of the College Consortium for International Studies.

  • The motto for the state of Missouri was coined by one of Southeast Missouri State University's presidents. "The Show Me State" derived from a speech Willard Vandiver gave while a Congressman. "I'm from Missouri. You have got to show me."

  • The Cape Girardeau area has a rolling terrain. Frequently, the Southeast Missouri State football team has to run "cardiac hill" during training. The hill is so named because many a player has said they feel as if they will have a heart attack after practice.

  • The Clark Terry Jazz Festival has been an annual event on campus for a decade. The famous musician has even made appearances.
