Community College. The school operates an extensive continuing education department as well as remedial and college preparation courses for students who need to brush up on basic skills before entering a degree program.
Southern State
Community College provides recreational activities for its students as well. Each year the campus hosts a variety of theatrical, musical, dance, and artistic performance by both student artists and visiting performers. The line-up for the 2007-08 season includes a performance of Bloody Poetry, a drama addressing what happens when poets Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, and Claire Goodwin converge, a one-act theatre competition, a musical theatre performance of Assassins, and a performance of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). Southern State Community College also hosts visiting lecture series and special guest speakers. The school also hosts a wide range of social and athletic activities. From personal interest organizations to student publications to volunteer groups, Southern State makes it easy for students to find like-minded individuals.
Student success is a top priority at Southern State Community College. All students have access to free academic advising, financial aid counseling, career counseling, and skills assessment testing. The school also hosts child care facilities and an Adult Opportunity Center that provides English as a Second Language, family literacy, and workplace readiness courses.
