Southern West Virginia Community and
Technical College was created to give southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky-based students the opportunity to get a low-cost education without sacrificing quality. This two-year institution offers associate degree and vocational certificate programs, each designed with the student in mind. Students can take courses during the day, evening, or
online. Southern West Virginia Community and
Technical College is especially strong in its vocational programs. In addition to offering a wide range of hands-on technical programs, the school also offers day-long workshops in vocational areas like surface mining technology, electrical training, and warehouse safety.
In addition to providing programs of study for traditional students, Southern West Virginia Community and
technical College also caters to members of the surrounding community. The school is home to a strong continuing education program geared towards older adult learners as well as educational enrichment camps for younger students. The school also provides several workforce readiness programs, welfare to work programs, and
business development services aimed at local entrepreneurs.
All Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College programs of study are backed by the school's academic support programs. All Southern West Virginia enrollees will have free academic advising, career counseling, disability support services, financial aid advising, transfer advising, tutoring, assessment testing, and personal counseling. The school also provides free student success workshops that cover topics like study skills, time management, money issues, test anxiety, and resume writing. The Out-of-School Youth program provides additional year-round job support services for students ages 16 through 21 who are not currently enrolled in school.
Outside of the classroom, Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College students participate in a wide variety of clubs and activities. Student-run organizations on campus range from social groups to religious organizations to academic clubs. On campus students will also find student-run publications, performance groups, a student government association, and a wide array of school-sponsored cultural events, dances, and recreational sports challenges that happen on campus throughout the year.
