Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute is a National Indian
community college and Land Grant Institution serving
American Indian and Alaskan Native students. The school is an associate member of the American Indian Higher
education Consortium (AIHEC).
This southwestern
technical school was designated a land-grant institution in 1994 and has access to the largest collection of BIA field support offices in the country, major Indian health facilities, an on-campus clinic, an international airport, and the largest professional and
technical workforce within a 500 mile radius. Geographically, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute is located in the heart of Indian Country, the center of New Mexico's high-tech corridor (Los Alamos Labs/Sandia Labs), five miles from a major university (UNM) and the largest voc-tech in the state (TVI). Half of all American Indians reside within SIPI'S immediate service area.
It is the mission of Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, a National Indian
Community College, to provide quality technical and higher education opportunities that meet the dynamic needs of federally recognized tribes. This endeavor provide the opportunities to: enter the technological workforce as self-sufficient and contributing members of society; acquire higher levels of academic achievement; and enrich and enhance student learning and self-esteem by responding to their mental, social, physical, spiritual, and cultural needs.

Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) accepts as students American Indian and Alaskan Natives, who must meet one of two tribal affiliation criteria: verification of US Federal tribal membership from a Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) agency or tribal census office; or must be one-quarter percent or more blood quantum of a federally recognized tribe(s), verified by either a BIA agency or tribal census office.
The Alumni Office of Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute will maintain contact with more than 12,000 alumni through the established channels of the college.
With the impact of global trends affecting Indian nations, the college strives to deliver culturally, socially, and economically relevant information, training, and services that will offer long-term solutions and encourages life-long learning among students.
