Established in 1911, Southwestern Law School is located in the heart of the urban core in Los Angeles. Southwestern Law School was founded as a private, non-sectarian institution. Today, Southwestern Law School is one of the most influential law schools in the western section of the
United States. The school claims members of the U.S. Congress, state Supreme Court justices, high-profile attorneys and other recognized names among its' alumni. The school has close ties with the Los Angeles and Hollywood community.
Southwestern Law School was the second law school in the Los Angeles area and was originally known as the
Southwestern College of Law. In an age when minorities were still segregated in schools and women weren't expected to be anything but mothers and wives, Southwestern Law School was blind to both race and gender. Throughout its history, Southwestern Law School has developed programs that would ensure a diverse student body, from offering part time evening courses for working adults to developing a program specifically for parents who have child care needs. With the exception of the Depression and during World War II, Southwestern Law School has continued to expand its programs and expand its campus.
Southwestern Law School is an
American Bar Association approved school. It is the only law school in the country with ABA approval that offers students the opportunity to seek a J.D. degree based on student's scheduling needs. The college offers traditional day courses, as well as evening courses for students working full time who want to pursue their degree. In addition to those programs, students may also choose a 2-year alternative J.D. program or a program designed specifically for those with childcare needs.
The Leigh A. Taylor Law Library on campus is one of the school's hallmarks. The library is home to a collection of more than 470,000 print and microfilms. The library is located in the Bullocks Wilshire Building, one of the most recognized Art Deco buildings in the world. The library can seat more than 600 people and has 80 workstations that can connect students to
online resources.
study abroad programs are offered each summer for Southwestern Law School students to Buenos Aries, Argentina; London, England; Vancouver, British Columbia and Guanajuato, Mexico.
