Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts is a Michigan-based
Professional School for people interested in careers in broadcasting. The Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts was founded in 1970 by Specs Howard, who spent the 1950s and 60s as one of the personalities on the Martin and Howard Show in Detroit. Howard continued to do voice-overs and commercials while embarking on his second career at the school. Although he began his career in 1948, before modern broadcasting
technology, Howard made sure the school remained up-to-date. The school still offers students the latest in broadcasting
education with state-of-the-art technology.
The 32-week program at the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts is designed to provide students with an entry-level education in either radio or video broadcasting. Students who graduate with a diploma usually transfer to another school that accepts
transfer credits from Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts, or begin entry-level careers. Students may either choose to concentrate in radio or video, or, if they desire, a dual concentration. If students choose a dual concentration, an additional 16-week course of study is required.
Students in the program start in the general curriculum for the first 16 weeks of study, which includes:
technical television; video performance; studio operations; career perspective I; applied speech; introduction to broadcast writing; broadcast writing; promotions; introduction to radio production and television news production. During the remaining half of the program, students take courses in their concentration. Video students continue with: television news writing; electronic news gathering techniques; advanced news production; specs in focus; studio production; advanced video production and career perspectives II. Students in the radio program continue with: radio performance; radio production; broadcast writing for radio; on air I & II; digital audio editing; and career perspectives II.
Prospective students are encouraged to make an appointment and visit the campus prior to beginning a course of study.
