Named for St. Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, the Patron of Franciscan Studies and Learning, St. Bonaventure University is a private,
Catholic school rooted in the Franciscan tradition. Dedicated in 1858, the school was established by a group of Franciscan friers who had come to
Western New York a few years before. The School of Franciscan Studies and the Franciscan Institute have also been a part of the school since the first half of the 20th century.
St. Bonaventure University is located on a 500-acre campus just an hour and half away from both Buffalo, New York and
Erie, Pennsylvania. It's location in western New York draws a wide range of more than 2,400 students per year. Students from more than 30 states and 15 foreign counties attend St. Bonaventure University. More than 80 percent are undergraduate students.
There are more than 40 undergraduate programs at St. Bonaventure University in four schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of
business, School of
education and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. St. Bonaventure University encourages students who aren't sure of their major to take their freshman year and decide after completing the core curriculum, which is designed to help students find their interests and goals. There is also a study abroad program offered through St. Bonaventure University.
The graduate program at St. Bonaventure University was established in the 1920s and has grown at a steady rate since. St. Bonaventure University has four graduate schools: The School of Arts and Sciences, the School of
business, School of Education and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
More than 70 percent of the student population lives on campus in one of the five residence halls or one of the two townhouse and apartment buildings on campus.
