St. John's college is a division of the University of British Columbia, offering residential membership to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and visiting scholars to the school. Students at St. John's College take part in university life by participating in programs, serving on committees and attending lectures on the campus.

Residential members at St. John's College live in 230-square-foot study rooms. There are some larger rooms available for married couples, as well as wheel chair accessible rooms and some rooms for post-doctoral fellows. All of the rooms have their own private baths and meals are provided by the St. John's College Dining Society. There are also common areas with kitchens and students can fix their own meals during times meals are not provided by the college.

Prospective residential students at St. John's College must fill out an application, submit a CV, as well as one academic reference. Students must stay for a minimum of five months. Those pursuing a Master's degree apply for 24 months and can apply for a 12-month extension. For those pursuing a Doctoral program, students can stay up to 36 months, with the possibility of a 12-month extension.

Students who wish to become non-residential members can still do so and be active in the college environment by attending lectures and joining activities, as well as participating in discussion groups and on social and academic committees. Participation by both residents and non-residential members is key to provide an active, thriving academic community at St. John's College.
