Institute of Technology is a
technology-focused college located in Hoboken,
New Jersey. Founded in 1870, Stevens Institute of Technology was the first college of mechanical
engineering. The college was established at the height of the
American Industrial Revolution and named for Edwin Stevens, a builder who designed iron-clad ships for the U.S. Navy. Stevens came from a distinguished family of engineers and he left money and land to establish the college.
Originally founded as a men's school, Stevens Institute of Technology became co-ed in 1971. Stevens Institute of Technology has progressed from the 19th century, but the main mission of the school is still to educate students who will become leaders in re-inventing American innovation.
Stevens Institute of Technology offers Bachelor's, Master and Doctorates in a variety of programs. Stevens Institute of Technology is home to four schools: Charles V. Schaefer Jr. School of Engineering and Science, Wesley J. Howe School of Technology Management, School of Systems and Enterprises, College of Arts and Letters.
Stevens Institute of Technology is located on the same land originally donated by the Stevens family. The campus is as historically famous as the school, with many points of interest. For example, it is home to the highest point in Hoboken - Castle Point Lookout - which was also recorded by Explorer Henry Hudson in his log in 1609. The campus is also home to the Edwin A. Stevens Building, which was constructed in 1870 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Student may choose to live on campus or off. Stevens Institute of Technology also has a variety of study-abroad programs from which to choose.

Stevens Institute of Technology was the first major college in the nation to implement a personal computer requirement in 1982 and had one of the first campus Intranet systems in the country.
One of the most famous Hoboken natives to receive an honorary degree from Stevens Institute of Technology was Frank Sinatra. There is also a drive named in his honor that runs along the Hudson River on campus.
In 1968, Stevens Institute of Technology was the home of the only known floating dormitory. The S.S. Stevens accommodated 150 Stevens and sat on the banks of the Hudson River. Today, an anchor remains as a Memorial to the former ship turned campus residence.
Elysian Fields, the spot marked as the first modern baseball game in 1845, is owned by the Stevens family and is located just north of the Stevens Institute of Technology campus.
Stevens Institute of Technology is home to many men's and women's intercollegiate sports teams.
