The State University of New York at New Paltz is located on a 257-acre campus midway between New York City and Albany in New Paltz, New York and is also a member of the State University of New York 64-public college system. The State University of New York, also known as SUNY is the largest university system in the United States. The State University of New York at New Paltz was established in 1828 as the New Paltz Classic Academy and later became one of the state's "normal" schools, so named for a teaching method that originated in France. The State University of New York at New Paltz is also one of the founding members of the SUNY system.

Many changes have occurred over the three centuries in which the State University of New York at New Paltz has been in operation. After becoming one of the state's normal schools, it morphed into the State Teachers College at New Paltz and finally into the liberal arts college it is known as today.

More than 7,600 students attend the State University of New York at New Paltz each year and have a wide range of educational options. Students may study for a number of Bachelor's and Master's degrees. As well, the State University of New York at New Paltz offers a pre-doctoral certification in Educational Supervision and Administration.

Students at the State University of New York at New Paltz may choose to live off campus or on campus in one of the 13 residence halls. Students who live on campus have immediate access to the more than 50 non-residence buildings. the State University of New York at New Paltz also has a 376-acre field campus on the banks of the Ashokan River.
