Situated on 191 acres of rolling hills in New York's City of Seven Valleys, Cortland, the State University of York College at Cortland is a founding member of
The State University of New York 64-public college system. The
State University of New York, also known as
SUNY is the largest university system in the United States. Originally one of the states's "Normal" schools, so named for an early French teacher training institution, the school was established in 1868.
Today, three schools at
SUNY Cortland enrolls over 7,300 students per year. Schools at the college are: arts and sciences, education and professional studies. There are currently more than 65 Bachelor's degree programs and over 30 Master's degree programs offered at SUNY Cortland. SUNY Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Memorial Geological Field Station on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany.
Students at SUNY Cortland have 17 residence halls on campus from which to choose that houses approximately 3,000 students. Students at SUNY Cortland have a wide variety of study abroad programs, which include study in Australia, Belize, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, France and more than a half dozen more countries.
Established in 1948, the state of New York was the last of the then 48 states to officially establish a university system. The State University of New York system has campuses all over the state, making it one of the most culturally, regionally and academic diverse systems in the country. The State University of New York colleges offers more than 7,600 degree and
certificate programs including short-term vocational/technical courses,
certificate programs, Associate, Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral Degree programs.

Elmer A. Sperry, an industrialist and inventor who co-founded Sperry-Rand Corp. was one of the earliest alums of The State University of New York College at Cortland.
The college has survived two fires, one that destroyed the main building in 1919 and another in 1983, which destroyed the dining hall and several other buildings.
In 2004, U.S. National Park Service designates SUNY Cortland's Huntington Memorial Camp, the former Camp Pine Knot, as the first National Historic Landmark within SUNY.
There are more than 55,000 SUNY Cortland alumni living in all 50 states, as well as in more than 40 foreign countries.
There are more than 20 varsity sports teams at SUNY Cortland, which includes wrestling, basketball, ice hockey, field hockey, cross-country, football, swimming and diving, volleyball and gymnastics.
