The State University of New York Upstate Medical University is located in Syracuse, New York and is a member of the State University of New York 64-public college system. The State University of New York, also known as SUNY is the largest university system in the United States. The State University of New York Upstate Medical University was formerly known as SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse.

Founded in 1834 as the Geneva Medical College, the State University of New York Upstate Medical University became part of the SUNY system in the 1950s. Today, the State University of New York Upstate Medical University enrolls more than 1,200 students. The State University of New York Upstate Medical University offers Bachelor of Professional Studies, Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Medicine/Philosophy, Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy in four colleges. The College of Graduate Studies, The College of Health Professions, College of Medicine and College of nursing. Other divisions at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University include University Hospital, University health care Center and University health care Manlius.

The 30-acre campus is home to 25 classroom, research and other facilities. The State University of New York Upstate Medical University offers nearly 20 residency programs including dentistry, emergency medicine, family medicine, general surgery, psychiatry, radiology, urology, radiation oncology, obstetrics and gynecology and physical medicine and rehab.

Established in 1948, the state of New York was the last of the then 48 states to officially establish a university system. The State University of New York system has campuses all over the state, making it one of the most culturally, regionally and academic diverse systems in the country. The State University of New York colleges offers more than 7,600 degree and certificate programs including short-term vocational/technical courses, certificate programs, Associate, Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral degree programs.

Quick Facts:

  • As a practical joke, the entire student body in 1847, voted to accept an application to the medical school - made by a woman. There was a lone dissenter among the students, but he was physically persuaded to change his vote. On November 11 of that year, the first woman admitted to the school, Elizabeth Blackwell, began her medical education. She graduated in 1849.

  • There are more than 2,500 faculty teaching at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University.
