Swarthmore College is a private
liberal arts and
engineering school located in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The 357-acre campus called Scott Arboretum is a nationally registered arboretum. The
Pennsylvania school was founded in 1864 by the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers, as one of the nation's first coeducational colleges. Though Swarthmore College is now non-sectarian, some Quaker values live on, including a commitment to the common good and the preparation of future leaders.
The
Pennsylvania school's varied study options include more than 600 courses a year and more than 50 subjects of study. Swarthmore College also offers students an honors program, the option to specialize their majors and an educational program that results in secondary school certification by the state. The Pennsylvania school is a member of the Tri-College Consortium, giving students the option of enrolling in courses at Swarthmore College along with Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges. Swarthmore College also offers its students the option of cross-registering for undergraduate classes at the
University of Pennsylvania.
Swarthmore College encourages its students to study abroad. In recent years, more than 40 percent of graduating seniors spent time studying at more than 100 destinations around the world, including Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. Paying full tuition at the Pennsylvania school covers the cost of a semester abroad, including tuition, meals, lodging and travel expenses.
