Sweet Briar College, located in Sweet Briar, Virginia, was founded in 1901 by Indiana Fletcher Williams in memory of her daughter, Daisy. The Virginia school's 3,300-acre campus includes several sanctuaries, two lakes and miles of trails. The National Register of Historic Places designated 21 of the Virginia school's 30 buildings as the Sweet Briar College National Historic District.

The Virginia school offers its students more than 40 major, minor, and certificate programs, including anthropology, engineering science, German studies, musical theater and studio art. Sweet Briar College also has pre-professional programs in pre-medicine, pre-veterinary and teacher education for its students. The honors program at Sweet Briar College is designed to challenge both the critical thinking and creative sides of its students, and includes new, faculty-designed classes each year.

Sweet Briar College also operates an internationally recognized riding program for its students, with the cost of instruction included in tuition. The program emphasizes hunter/jumper/equitation, training and schooling young horses, and hunter-oriented cross country. An equine studies certificate program offers students at Sweet Briar College the opportunity to concentrate in management or in teaching and schooling, preparing them for equine-related careers.

In 2008, Princeton Review's annual college guidebook of 366 colleges ranked Sweet Briar College in five top-20 category lists. The Virginia school was named most beautiful campus and placed in the top 10 for career placement services plus the availability of faculty.
