The Boston Conservatory is a private, independent performing arts school located in Boston, Massachusetts that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees to students interested in the performing arts. Established in 1867 by Julius Eichberg, The Boston Conservatory was founded as both a professional training Academy as well as a community music school. At the beginning of the twentieth century, The Boston Conservatory merged with the National Associated Studios of Music. At that time, The Boston Conservatory added dance and theater to its curriculum.

Today, The Boston Conservatory is a vibrant part of cultural life in Boston. The Boston Conservatory students give over 200 public performances a year. The Boston Conservatory takes a trade school approach by providing rigorous practical training through class time, applied lessons, practice, ensemble rehearsals and performances.

Admittance to The Boston Conservatory is highly competitive. Just over 500 students are selected at any one time, leaving the classes small and individualized. The Music Division at The Boston Conservatory has a total of 345 students each year, which are led by more than 110 faculty members. The Music Division has 25 different programs within seven departments: piano, strings, voice and opera, woodwinds, brass, harps and percussion and history, composition and theory. Degrees offered: Bachelor's of Music and Master's of Music degrees as well as Graduate Performance Diploma and Artist Diploma.

The Dance Division provides integrated training in ballet, modern, jazz, tap, ethnic styles, Pilates and the Alexander Technique. The Dance Division offers the Bachelor of fine arts degree. In the Theater Division, both the Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Music degrees are offered. The theater curriculum includes all components of theater performance training--Acting, speech, dance, theater movement, voice, musicianship, directing, stagecraft, and theater academics. During their last year, students may choose an emphasis in Directing, Music Performance, Dance, or Acting.

First-time students attending The Boston Conservatory are expected to live on campus if they are under 21 years old, unless they are commuting to the school from their parent's residence.
