The Citadel is a public, senior military college located in Charleston, South Carolina, established in 1842 by the state legislature. The South Carolina School became coeducational in 1996 when women were first admitted into the Corps of Cadets. The Citadel sits on a 176-acre campus at the banks of the Ashley River. In its annual rankings, U.S. News and World Report has repeatedly ranked the Citadel as a top regional institution.

All cadets at the Citadel participate in an ROTC program, receiving military instruction and physical fitness training along with their classes. Cadets live on campus with their assigned company in barracks. First-year cadets experience an indoctrination process to learn lessons on teamwork, time management and self-discipline.

Undergraduate programs at the Citadel are housed in five schools. The South Carolina school offers cadets five bachelor's degrees from more than 15 areas, six master's degrees from more than 10 areas, and one specialist degree from two areas. Degrees given by the Citadel are accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The graduate school at the Citadel offers cadets 19 graduate programs and one graduate certificate program, with concentrations in business, psychology, computer science and education. The master's of business administration program at the Citadel is the only nationally accredited MBA program in that region of the state.
