Founded in the mid-1850s, the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art is an institution of higher learning that is dedicated to preparing talented students through its programs in architecture, art, and engineering. Thanks to the college's prime location in New York City, students don't just learn their craft -- they get to live it. With a variety of architect, art, and engineer offices and institutions across the city, students of the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art have plenty of opportunities for first-hand experience in their trade with internships and part-time work.

Comprised of three separate schools -- the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture, the Albert Nerken School of Engineering, and the School of Art -- the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art requires students to take certain core courses in the liberal arts and sciences before they can embark upon studying their major. The Bachelor of Architecture requires five years of study, unlike the Bachelor of fine arts and the Bachelor of Engineering programs, which take four years.
