The Georgia Academy of Technical Wellness

187 Roberson Mill Rd
Milledgeville, GA 31061

Founded in 2002, the Georgia Academy of Technical Wellness, Inc. was originally known as the Georgia Academy of Therapeutic Massage. The name change happened in December of 2006 because the school offers more courses in alternative and holistic therapies. This Georgia School's mission statement is to teach and develop skilled practitioners who embody the philosophy of holistic wellness.

The Massage and Spa Therapy Certificate Program was the first education program to be provided by the school, approved by the Georgia Board of massage therapy. It belongs to the AMTA Council of Schools and listed with the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Body Work.

At the Georgia Academy of Technical Wellness, massage and spa therapy is offered as a choice for a career. Because massage therapy is in the mainstream, more businesses are demanding massage therapists in their offices, from hair salons to dentist offices. In addition, businesses have included massage therapy in health maintenance programs as "preventative" therapy for their employees, as a way to de-stress employees.

The goal for Georgia Academy of Technical Wellness is to provide an education that allows students to graduate as safe, professional practitioners. The curriculum encourages students to take an integrated approach at helping individuals, families, and organizations. Students who graduate from the program work in top-quality spas throughout Georgia. Some graduates open their own spas, work in hospitals, or provide services at wellness centers. Community members can take advantage of massage and spa services. Student services are supervised by faculty members who are licensed massage therapists. This practice allows clients to give feedback to students for future career opportunities.

Upon graduation, students are expected to be knowledgeable about anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology, body mechanics, and hygiene. Graduates are also expected to know about the history and ethics of spa therapy treatments. In addition, they must be able to demonstrate what they learned through various therapy techniques, as well as proper draping procedures. Graduates have to have a solid foundation in body wraps, salt glow body polish, and exfoliation treatments.
