For over 45 years, the Graduate Center has been the doctorate-granting institution of The City University of New York (CUNY). The Graduate Center is a unique consortium of over 1700 faculty members; its core faculty of 125 Graduate Center appointments is supplemented by over 1600 additional faculty members drawn from throughout CUNY's eleven senior colleges and New York City's leading cultural and scientific institutions.

The Graduate Center enrolls nearly 4500 doctoral and graduate students and offers over 30 doctoral programs and seven master's programs in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The Graduate Center is proud of its premier academic programs and is continuously recognized for its excellence in education. In fact, the recently released Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index placed ten of the Graduate Center's Ph.D. programs among the top ten in the country, with six ranked in the top five.

In addition to the doctoral and master's programs, the Graduate Center is connected to 29 research centers and institutes focused on areas of compelling social, civic, cultural, and scientific concerns. Furthermore, continuing education and Public Programs extend the Graduate Center's educational and cultural resources to the general public, including lectures, symposia, performances, and workshops.

Since its inception, close to 10,000 students have earned doctorates from the Graduate Center and have gone on to become successful leaders in both the public and private sectors. The Graduate Center has prepared a group of highly qualified professionals from diverse backgrounds to enhance their lives as well as the lives of countless others. The Graduate Center, through its expert faculty, outstanding programs, and dynamic research centers, is playing an integral role in local, state, national, and global prosperity.
