The Julliard School

60 Lincoln Center Plaza
New York, NY

The Julliard School is one of the most recognized performing arts schools in the country and is located in the heart of New York City. Founded in 1905 as the Institute of Musical Art, the school was established by Dr. Frank Damrosch, the head of music education for the New York Public Schools. Damrosch and his financier, James Loeb, realized there was a need for a music Academy, but underestimated the demand. They quickly had to move to a larger building when they planned for 100 students and had many more wanting to attend.

The Julliard Graduate School was founded in 1924 and the two schools later merged to form what has become the modern school, as it is known today. The Pre-College Division also offers 30-week courses during the fall and winter to promising young people ages 8-18 who might want to pursue a career in music. In the College Division, students may choose one of four schools: Dance, Drama, liberal arts or Music. In the Dance Division, students may pursue a program of study leading to a Bachelor's degree. Many students pursue the Bachelor of fine arts with the emphasis in dance. In the Drama Division, students may earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts, or students who already hold a Bachelor's degree may choose a diploma program. In the liberal arts Division, students concentrate on humanities the first two years and may choose a wide variety of "specialty" areas their junior and senior years such as: art history, creative writing, the Black Arts Movement, the Harlem Renaissance, European history, film, the family, existentialism, and various philosophical traditions. Finally, the Music Division offers a Bachelor of Music degree and graduate-level programs leading to a Graduate Diploma, a Master of Music degree, or a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. Postgraduate study is available to selected advanced students in the Artist Diploma Program.

First year students at The Julliard School are expected to live on campus in the Samuel B. and David Rose Building. The residence hall accommodates 350 students and is on the top 12 floors of the building.
