In 1969, the New Jersey legislature approved the funding for a new state college. Named for New Jersey's signer of the Declaration of Independence, Richard Stockton State College was born. The college first established a temporary campus at the location of the Mayflower Hotel in 1971. Its more than 1,000 students and faculty were able to move into its new 1,600-acre campus that December.

Today, The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey offers over 45 undergraduate degrees in seven schools: arts and humanities, business, general studies, professional studies, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics and education. The school began offering graduate degrees in 1999 and they currently have over 20 graduate programs. Over 7,300 students enroll per year at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey offers both residential halls and apartment living on campus. Over 2,000 students choose one of the options of on-campus living. All of the campus living quarters are furnished and are wired for Internet access. Students also have plenty of choices for off campus living as well. Apartment complexes and summer homes not occupied during the school year are just two such options.

U.S. News and World Report ranked The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey sixth in the nation among public liberal arts colleges. The Princeton Review also named the college as one of its "highly selective colleges."


Quick Facts:

  • In 1990, Stockton College opened one of the first Holocaust Resource Centers in the United States that is located on the grounds of a public college.

  • In 1994, Stockton College was the home to the World Cup Soccer team from Saudi Arabia as they trained for the tournament. The Saudi team returned in 1996 to train for the Olympics, as well as prepare for matches held in the U.S. The college has also hosted the United States youth soccer team and the U.S. women's Olympic basketball team.

  • The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey claimed the 2001 NCAA Men's Soccer Division III championship. In 2003, Kim Marino grabbed the NCAA Division III indoor track and field women's pole vault championship and record.

  • In 1997, Stockton College and Rutger's University partnered to establish the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve on the Mullica River.

  • Over 90 percent of Stockton's faculty hold doctorate or terminal degrees in their area of Expertise.

  • The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey participates in the NCAA Division III. The college offers a wide variety of sports including cross country, field hockey, soccer, women's tennis and volleyball, basketball, indoor track and field, baseball, softball, lacrosse, women's rowing and outdoor track and field.
